The Intramural Sports Department Staff reserves the right to regulate the participation of any individual of varsity, professional or sport club capacity. Exceptions to the rules must be approved by the Director of Intramural Sports and may be appealed.

The use of alcohol or illegal drugs by participants or spectators is prohibited.


To participate in HU intramural activities one must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an HU student, faculty, or staff member with a valid HU photo I.D. card.
  • Graduate and undergraduate students must be currently and continuously enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours for undergraduate and 6 credit hours for graduate students.
  • A participant may compete on only one single sex and one co-ed team for each sport in any division. Players are not allowed to change teams once play has begun. The first team an individual plays on becomes his/her official team. The second team forfeits all games in which the ineligible player participated in that sport during the current season.
  • Current members of the intercollegiate teams may not compete in intramural play in the same or related sport during the academic year in which they are playing. Former intercollegiate athletes who have used one year of eligibility, who are red-shirting, or have been on any varsity roster may participate on an intramural team if the following criteria are met:
    • Sport club members and/or ex-intercollegiate players must register with the Intramural Sports Department prior to participation in a scheduled intramural activity.
    • A team may have up to 4 former intercollegiate and/or club members on their roster.
  • An individual barred from intercollegiate athletics for any reason by the NCAA or HU shall be barred from those intramural activities in which he/she broke the amateur regulations of the bodies that govern intercollegiate athletics at HU.

Assumption of Liability

Participation in intramural activities could result in physical injury, which could be serious or fatal. HU assumes no responsibility for injuries during these activities. Participation is voluntary. All participants are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to obtain personal medical insurance to cover cases of accident or injury. Such insurance can be obtained either through the University Student Health Insurance Program or through individual insurance companies.


All protests involving ineligible players must be made in writing and submitted to the ISO within 24 hours of the infraction.

A request for rule clarification/interpretation must be made on the playing field/court at the time of the alleged misinterpretation of the rule or incident. The captain of the protesting team will request a time-out, and with the opposing team captain, will confer with the intramural supervisor and the referee. If it is found that the rule was interpreted correctly, the time-out will not count against the protesting team. After play has resumed, the call cannot be questioned.



Decisions made to the Intramural Sports staff regarding eligibility or suspension may be appealed to the Director of Intramural Sports in writing within 3 business days of the suspension.


The ISD will not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct and/or inappropriate behavior during intramural activities. Such behavior shall be will be governed be the Sportsmanship Rating Key.

The officials and intramural staff will rate each team on a scale of 0 to 5. This rating will be recorded and be reviewed by the ISD on the next business day. Only teams with an average rating of 3.0 will be allowed to participate in the playoffs.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

A player or spectator who demonstrates unsportsmanlike conduct while participating in or observing an intramural activity will be disciplined accordingly.

  1. Game suspension Obscene /abusive conduct/ language by a participant and/or spectator.
  2. Game suspension verbally threatening an official Fighting between players/spectators
  3. Season Suspension Physical contact with an official, Intramural staff member, and supervisor


Any player ejected from a game must make an appointment to meet with the ISD before they can resume participation in intramural activities.


All offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Suspensions can carry over into other seasons and semesters. If the player does not fulfill his/her suspension then he/she will be disqualified from participating in any intramural sporting activity for one year from the initial suspension.

Extreme Unsportsmanlike Conduct or repeated ejections from play can result in permanent or indefinite suspension from intramural sports activities as governed by the ISD.
